Sydney Olympic – 2018 Kick-Off

As usual, it has been quite an eventual off-season/pre-season for Sydney Olympic Football Club.

From beating the reigning National NPL Champions, Heidelberg United 4-2 down in Melbourne, to not winning another match for the rest of the pre-season. Which included losses to:

- Bonnyrigg White Eagles 3-0
- Sutherland Sharks 2-1
- Blacktown City 1-0

As well as a 1-1 draw in there against NPL 2 side, Mounties Wanderers.

As a result of maybe this or maybe some other issues, Gorka Etxeberria’s reign as Sydney Olympic coach is over. We can speculate all we want but what is done is done and we all must now move on.

The Club has moved swiftly to appoint a new coach, with that being Sydney Olympic Legend, Abbas Saad. We will have to wait and see what type of an effect this all has on the players.

At this current moment and to the best of my knowledge this is roughly what our First Grade squad is looking like heading into the season:

Paul Henderson, William Angel, Niko Tsattalios, Jake de Marigny, Jinya An, Jason Madonis, Hagi Gligor, Max Burgess, Darcy Burgess, Paul Katsetis, George Timotheou, Tom Whiteside, Radovan Pavicevic, Stephen Athanaseris, Rafa Jimenez, Nicola Kuleski, Riley Woodcock, Alex Sanchez, Callum Fitzpatrick, Luke Watson

It is up to the coaching staff and the players now to work together, to get the best out of each other and to have a successful season.

At the season launch, another Sydney Olympic Legend was added to the Clubs Hall of Fame, Peter Raskopoulos.

A former Socceroo, only 3 players have played more matches for the Club than “Rasko”. A long time Captain, he is synonymous with the Clubs golden period of the mid 1980’s where we played in 4-straight National Finals (’83 & ’85 Cup Finals and ’84 & ’86 Grand Finals) of course he was later Coach and CEO. A more than worthy addition.

So the start of the 2018 season is here and it all begins this Sunday, March 11, as we host the Bonnyrigg White Eagles at Belmore Sports Ground, Kick-Off is at 3pm. Get down to Belmore and support the Club and the players.

  2. What a basket case we have become sacking coaches is now the norm for this proud club and the questions have to be asked what on earth is going on a week before the season.if it was results based I hope Gorkan knew that as trials are usually for experimentation and giving possible fringe players a go.was it the players who had enough and if so why are they calling the shots?strange decision so close to the year

I am extremely worried about this season and the possibility of relegation. did anyone notice that the 20’s and 18’s results weren’t published on the weekend and being there I can confirm both sufferered extremely heavy defeats and given last years form for both teams we should be very worried if 1st grade struggles

And let me bring up this Karim assistant gentleman is he the replacement for Peter Zorbas.. it’s extrenely ovbious to many people around the grounds that his coaching is not up to scratch (20’s was a disaster last year with multiple resignations only to be bought back ) and he is here for one sole purpose and that is taking a certain son to trials in Germany every 2 months with his connections yet he sits as the right hand man in an extremely important role when clearly Zorbas is the better option yet unwanted is this how we expect to move forward by leaving a club legend like Zorbas out of the picture and employing people like this.cmon Olympic let’s look after those that have served us well Zorbas knows the boys inside out , they played for him last year , they would do it again and he is clearly the best number 2 out there for us

Interesting year ahead I hope we don’t get caught up in a relegation battle

    1. Didn't the same guy get removed from a Nick Rizo training session after getting caught secretly filming drills on his phone in the grandstand?

  4. Anyone else hearing the rumour that given there is a new board at the Bulldogs , Olympic’s time at Belmore could be over sooner than we think?
